Getting Used Histones into the Waste Disposal.

Proteasomes are highly abundant and conserved protease complexes that eliminate unwanted proteins in the cells. The cryo-EM structures of PA200 and the PA200-20S proteasome complex, by Hongxin Guan, Youwang Wang, Ting Yu, Yini Huang, Ping Zhu, Songying Ouyang and colleagues, reveal two openings on PA200 which bind inositol phosphates as cofactors, and novel insights into PA200-induced gate-opening of 20S.

How Likely is it? That Depends...

Wei-Hsiang Lin, Justin Gardner and Shih-Wei Wu show how probability estimation can be affected by the context of our recent experience, namely, how the presence of multiple events experienced closed in time can influence their respective probability estimates.

Sex, Heat and the Genetics of Lifespan

Wen Huang, Terry Campbell, Trudy Mackay and colleagues show that the effects of alleles associated with naturally occurring variation for lifespan in fruit flies are different in males and females and in different thermal environments. These genotype-by-sex and genotype-by-environment interactions may account for the maintenance of variation for lifespan in nature.

            Unexpected Advantage of "Leaky" Vaccination

Richard Bailey, John Dunn, Andrea Doeschl-Wilson and colleagues show that "leaky" vaccination of chickens infected with Marek's disease virus reduced symptoms and lowered mortality in the unvaccinated contact birds infected by them. The cause was transmission of lower virus loads from vaccinated than unvaccinated birds; this benefit of leaky vaccination is rarely taken into consideration.

            Making Jellyfish Eggs

A study of jellyfish oocytes, by Gonzalo Quiroga Artigas, Evelyn Houliston and co-workers, identifies the receptor for Maturation-Inducing Hormone, the neuropeptide hormone that triggers oocyte maturation and spawning via GαS and cyclic AMP. This receptor defines a superfamily of hormone-receptor systems involved in regulating sexual reproduction across animal species.

            Imperfection in Working Memory

Working memory degrades over time. This study by Michael Wolff, Mark Stokes and co-authors suggests that the neural coding scheme is stable, despite other time-varying dynamics. Error in performance is likely due to drift in the mnemonic representation within the otherwise stable coding scheme.

            Asymmetry in Auditory Cortical Processing

Capitalizing on intracranial data from 96 epileptic patients, Jérémy Giroud, Benjamin Morillon and co-workers precisely estimate the processing timescales along the cortical auditory hierarchy and reveals that an asymmetric sampling emerges in associative areas.

Breakfast, not Late-Night Snack, to Keep off the Fat

Circadian regulation of metabolism implies that switching between oxidation of carbs and lipids might depend on the timing of meals. This study shows that lipid oxidation is higher when subjects avoid late-night eating.
