            The persimmon genome reveals clues to the evolution of a lineage-specific sex determination system in plants

            Here, Akagi et al explore the evolutionary events leading to dioecy, a mating system with separate male and female individuals, in persimmon. The authors discover a lineage-specific whole-genome duplication event and observe that MeGl, a gene previously identified to regulate sex in persimmon, underwent adaptive evolution after this event.

            Planarian EGF repeat-containing genes megf6 and hemicentin are required to restrict the stem cell compartment

            The freshwater planarian maintains a large population of adult stem cells throughout its lifespan. These cells are constantly dividing and located in a specific spatial compartment, though no known physical boundary keeps them in place. In this study, Lindsay-Mosher et al find that two EGF repeat-containing genes, megf6 and hemicentin, are required to keep stem cells within their compartment.

            Aberrant cell segregation in the craniofacial primordium and the emergence of facial dysmorphology in craniofrontonasal syndrome

            Using mice harboring mutations in the Efnb1 gene in different embryonic tissues, and in receptor genes Ephb1-3, together with quantitative methods to measure craniofacial structures in developing embryos, Niethamer, Teng et al establish the tissue-specific contributions of EPHRIN-B1 mosaicism to craniofacial dysmorphology.

            Control of clathrin-mediated endocytosis by NIMA family kinases

            Here, Joseph, Wang et al show that C. elegans NEKL-2 and NEKL-3 regukate endocytosis. The authors characterise the specific functions of NEKL-2 and NEKL-3 in endocytosis and show that their human counterparts, which have been implicated in cardiovascular and renal diseases as well as many types of cancers, likely have very similar functions.
